Roaring Fork Students at the State Capitol!!!

I know, I know.  Pictures would be great here and I'll get them but I just can't wait to share what happened yesterday.

19 Latino youth, both boys and girls, from Roaring Fork High School's ELL classes and Basalt High School's Latinas Arriba group woke up VERY early to ride a bus to Denver to speak to their representative about education issues important to them.

They participated in Colorado Youth Matter's Youth Action Day and were among 140 youth from across the State of Colorado who learned how we can access our representatives.  Our youth had some specific issues they wanted to address related to access of quality education for all youth including

More medically accurate sexual health education for ALL youth in school

We learned that it was important to provide our issues in a concise written form.  We also learned that personal stories are really impactful and need to be connected to our issues and also concise.  Representative Wilson from Glenwood Springs asked for our email information and said he would be writing up our requests in his newsletter that he sends out each month.  We are looking forward to seeing this!

In the weeks to come, some of the youth who attended this event will be providing their own personal stories about the event and their issues.  PREP was excited to support this event and look forward to continued work with these school leaders!
