HB07-1292 and the CDE’s Academic Health Standards require that sexual health education must emphasize abstinence as the only certain way to avoid pregnancy and provide evidence-based, culturally relevant, medically accurate curricula addressing STI transmission and must include the following:
· Parental involvement and family communication
· Responsible and healthy decision making
· Instruction on STI’s including HIV/AIDS and HPV, and disease prevention
· The health benefits and potential side effects of using contraceptives and barrier methods
· How alcohol and drug use impairs responsible and healthy decision making
· Responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others
|
The 2 year PREP federal grant meets and exceeds ALL Colorado sexual health education regulations and standards by:
· Providing free training for local service providers and educators on evidence-based youth curricula: Cuidate! and Draw the Line, Respect the Line
· Purchasing all curricula and materials for school districts.
· Providing free parent education workshops (Roots and Wing) on how to have open conversations with teens about sex and other high risk behaviors.
· Creating positive youth development opportunities for leadership and empowerment
· Providing adult preparation skill development
